I asked them to really feel how it felt to have this friendly and strong animal beside them, protecting them.Īfter this meditation I did a quick ‘spaghetti test’ (flexing and relaxing the muscles) since they were lying down anyway and I know they love it! To help them get their powerful animal more visually clear I read a guided meditation where the children met their power animal. He looked at me puzzled and I don’t blame him since everything is always so mixed up thoughts, emotions, feelings.Īnother thing I told the kids they can do when they have a scary image in their mind, is to think of a power animal, which can protect them. I also asked him if he could try to notice the difference between the feeling of hunger and the thought. A boy yelled out that there are thoughts in his belly and it is thinking of food! After laughing a bit I explained him that it is still a thought which is happening in his mind, and that he should ask for the talking stone before sharing ). Or lower their attention to their belly, because there are no thoughts in belly. I suggested that if they have scary images in their mind they can, think about something nice/ change the image to a nice image. That is what I am working towards so I am happy that already one is practicing this! I was delighted to hear that one of the boys mentioned that he would take a few deep breaths when he saw scary pictures in his mind. I asked the kids ‘what do you do when you see scary images?’.

Then we went on discussing about scary images. A reminder for me that everybody is different and what works for one does not have to work for someone else. A girl told me the opposite, she could concentrate better when she had her eyes open, staring at the ground. One boy told me that by closing his eyes, he felt more relaxed and able to concentrate. I asked her if she could still focus on her breath while seeing the spirals and this was the case. When I asked what they experienced during this exercise one girl remarked that she saw three spirals of light with different colours around herself. I guided the children in shifting ‘the spotlight of their attention’ from sounds to thoughts and images to the breath and back to sounds again. Know that they can do something about feeling scared, even if it is ‘just’ focussing on their breath instead of feeding the stories in their minds.Īs a start I wanted to let the children become aware of their inner images and thoughts. When children become aware of their ‘inner images’ and how they can work with them, they can feel more in control and empowered. They love to use their imagination and I always enjoy hearing what is going on inside their imaginative world too. After our usual start of listening to the disappearing sound of the Tibetan bells I told the children that we were going to use our imagination in today’s lesson.
